Embellished Onesie

I love seeing babies in onesies. When my boys were little they wore them all the time and my youngest, two-and-a-half, always has one under his jammies or his t-shirt. The cool thing is that they don't have to be just plain white - they can be embellished just about any way you want and I love to add my own spin to them.

Plus, they make terrific baby shower gifts because you can really customize them and when the mom-to-be opens your present, you'll see her eyes totally light up at the cuteness she's holding in her hands.

Materials Needed
  • One package onesies (I like to use organic cotton but it isn't necessary also, sizes ranging from birth to 9 months for variety)
  • Embroidery floss
  • Iron on transfer paper that can be run through your printer (I've found this a Michael's and Staples)
  • Image of choice (if you're using one you found on the internet, be sure it's royalty free)
  • Embroidery needle(s)
Directions

  • Pre-wash and dry the onesies
  • Select your image and print it onto the iron-on transfer paper according to the directions on the package (be sure to print it in reverse or it will iron on backwards; can't tell you how many times I've done this. Also, you may want to print out more than one image on a piece of iron-on paper just for efficiency sake and also because it's kind of pricey).
  • Once your image is printed, trim it with sharp scissors and iron it on according to the directions on the package. Allow it to cool.
  • Select the color of embroidery floss you want to use (I love what Stacey and Clinton of What Not To Wear say when people complain that a chosen color doesn't match the outfit, "....it doesn't match, it goes!"). Don't get too hung up on the color, after all, babies look cute in pretty much anything.
  • Using a blanket stitch, outline the cuffs and collar of the onesie. Here's how to do this stitch if you're not familiar with it (courtesy of knittingdaily.com)

Now, sit back and admire your handiwork. Put it on your own little cherub or sweetly package up a variety of them and give them to a new mommie. By the way, these wash up and dry beautifully. You may want to turn them inside out but it really isn't necessary.

Cute! Cute!
